Cameras, printers, time clocks: the forgotten connected devices

In an SME, the connected devices to watch are not gadgets: they are security cameras, multifunction printers, time clocks and access control systems, and meeting room screens. They are often left with their factory password and no updates, on the same network as the workstations.

Why they matter

These devices are plugged into the company network, sometimes reachable from the internet so they can be checked remotely. A factory password or software that is never updated turns them into a way in, then a starting point to reach the workstations and servers on the same network.

To check this week

  • Has the factory password of every camera, printer and time clock been changed?
  • Do these devices receive updates from their manufacturer, and does someone apply them?
  • Are they on a network separate from workstations and servers, and closed to direct access from the internet?
